Introduction

Van Berkel International S.r.l. is committed to making its e-commerce site, The Berkel World, accessible, in accordance with Directive (EU) 2019/882 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 April 2019 on the accessibility requirements for products and services, and with the Legislative Decree of May 27, 2022, n. 82, issued in implementation of the aforementioned Directive. This accessibility statement applies to the website https://www.theberkelworld.com/.

General Description of the Service

The Berkel World is an online store that allows users to view and purchase Berkel-branded slicers, knives, and other accessories. Customers can browse the product catalog, read detailed descriptions, consult technical specifications, and complete their purchases securely. The service is accessible via the website from desktop and mobile devices.

Compliance Status: Partially Compliant

This website is partially compliant with the requirements of EU Directive 2019/882 (European Accessibility Act) and the WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines. A thorough analysis conducted on June 10, 2025, revealed an overall accessibility score of 56%, highlighting 1,550 elements with accessibility issues. The partial compliance is due to the critical issues listed below.

Non-Accessible Content and Reasons

The identified non-conformities have been classified according to the four fundamental principles of accessibility: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust.

1. Perceivable

Content is not always presented in a way that can be perceived by all users, including those with visual impairments:

  • Images without alternative text: 459 significant images lack a text description (alt attribute), making the content inaccessible to screen readers.

  • Insufficient contrast: 68 textual or graphical elements have contrast ratios that are too low, hindering readability for users with low vision.

2. Operable

Some interface components and interactive features are not fully usable with a keyboard or assistive technologies:

  • Limited keyboard navigation: 8 elements cannot be reached or activated using only the keyboard.

  • Non-descriptive or empty links: 34 links do not contain explanatory text, making it difficult for users of assistive technologies to understand their destination.

3. Understandable

The user interface does not always provide clear or consistent information for interaction:

  • Labels missing or not linked to input fields: 221 form controls lack programmatically associated labels, compromising comprehension for screen reader users.

4. Robust

Some code elements are not robust enough to ensure compatibility with all assistive technologies:

  • Non-compliant or missing ARIA attributes: 26 occurrences show incorrect use of ARIA roles and properties, which can interfere with the proper functioning of screen readers and other tools.

Content Excluded from the Regulation

  • Decorative images: Some images are excluded from the scope of the Directive (e.g., image_alt classified as decorative).

  • Accessible alternative version: In some cases, a compliant alternative version is available.
